A recent report highlights significant gaps in mental health care and food assistance for Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders (NHPIs) in California during the COVID-19 pandemic. Co-authored by UC Riverside's Andrew Subica, the study reveals that many eligible individuals from these communities were unable to access essential services that could have alleviated their struggles during this challenging time.
The pandemic exacerbated existing disparities, with NHPIs facing unique cultural and systemic barriers that hindered their ability to seek help. Many reported feeling isolated and overwhelmed, yet a substantial number did not receive the mental health support they needed. Additionally, food insecurity became a pressing issue, as traditional support networks were disrupted and access to resources diminished.
The findings underscore the urgent need for targeted interventions and policies to better support NHPIs, ensuring they receive adequate mental health care and food assistance in times of crisis. Addressing these disparities is crucial for fostering resilience and promoting overall well-being within these communities.
